Product History
When did these crafts start to craft?:400 years ago / 1600AD / Edo period in Japan
Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware are ceramics produced in Kyoto. The difference between these two is the Kyo-ware refers to the whole ceramics produced in Kyoto, while Kiyomizu-ware refers to the ceramics in Kiyomizu area. In the early Edo period (1600s), main production was tea ceremony utensils. While mechanization has spread to other production centers as time has progressed, Kyo-ware and Kiyomizu-ware is that they are still made by hand. One of the characteristics of Kyoy-ware and Kiyomizu-ware is that many avant-garde artists have emerged, creating a variety of works that cannot be lumped together. There is no set style, and the free style boosted the popularity among the masses.
Craftsman Story
Craftsman Profile
Yuko Hayashi / Koson Kiln
“Koson Kiln” has a history of over 100years on the slopes of Chawan-Zaka next to the famous Kiyomizu temple in Kyoto. We have mainly been producing vessels which are made of white and celadon porcelain.
I entered the ceramic world when I was 21 years old.
I have been helping my father with his work whilst also raising children
and I have been challenging, improving, and pursuing my own ceramic style as a craftsperson….
Craftsman Passion
Pursuing, challenging, and refining the art of ceramics.
Inspired by the traditional Japanese sweet-making technique Hasamigiku, I developed a unique method of cutting into unfired clay with scissors, which I call Tsuchibasami—“Scissoring Clay.” I apply this delicate and intricate pattern mainly to flower vases and illuminators. Many of my works reflect the beauty of chrysanthemums, but I also explore other motifs such as feathers and fish scales.
