At the time, imported towels were expensive and were only used by a limited number of upper class people as lapel wraps. Satoi focused on the pile structure of the towels, their high absorbency, and the speed with which they dried, and was convinced that they would surely be used in Japanese daily life as a substitute for hand towels. He decided to devote himself to the domestic production of towels, abandoned his family's cotton weaving business, and rented a house in Nakajo, Kitanakadori-mura, Sennan-gun (now Izumisano City), where he devoted himself to research. After much hard work, he succeeded in weaving towels by terry motion in 1887, the current weaving method. After that, Satoi exported the “Gozarashi Towel” to Shanghai and started factory production. He also encouraged his friends and acquaintances who were suffering from the recession of the time to take up towel weaving, thus creating the foundation of the Senshu towel production area.
