Product Story
General Product Information
The production process begins with the growing of straw.
The harvested straw is dyed, cut, and hand-applied one by one to the box, which is then decorated with geometric patterns.
The carefully dyed straw gives off a unique shine.
The small size of the box makes it ideal for storing accessories and other small objects.
Product History
When did these crafts start to craft?:300 years ago / 1700AD / Edo period in Japan
Hyogo Prefecture Straw Crafts Designated as Traditional Crafts
Straw craft has a long history and tradition. It is said that about 300 years ago, travelers from Inshu (Tottori Prefecture), who came to Kinosaki for a hot-spring cure, affixed colored straw to bamboo flutes and frames, and sold them at the eaves of inns to supplement their lodging fees.
Later, as the technique progressed, some of them were made into boxes and ema (votive picture horses), and in the Meiji era (1868-1912), famous painters came to Japan to draw preliminary sketches and give designs for prototypes. Today, straw is dyed and stretched over paulownia boxes, colored paper, dokuraku (a Japanese traditional Japanese toy), earthenware bells, and other items.
