When did these crafts start to craft?：200 years ago / 1800AD / Edo period in Japan

Kumano brush is a traditional craft made in Hiroshima Prefecture. The history of the Kumano brush dates back to the late Edo period (1800s). Full-scale production started in the year 1835, but production temporarily ceased during World War II. After the war, when calligraphy education was discontinued, the company began producing not only calligraphy brushes but also painting brushes and cosmetic brushes. Later, calligraphy education in schools was restored, resulting in a greater demand for Kumano brushes than before.

As written above, craftsman have not controlled last phase of sales channel that resulting in selling price is set by third-party without craftsman’s recognition. There are some cases that only less than 10% of selling price is given to craftsman. We promise with our customer / craftsman that we offer the fair trade with craftsmen in our contract!
