Product History
When did these crafts start to craft?:500 years ago / 1500AD / Sengoku period in Japan
The origin of Aizu Hongo pottery is said to be the firing of roof tiles for the construction of the castle of a feudal lord. Although many kilns were built after that, the industry was caught in the fires of war and the industry was not viable for a long time. However, the kilns continued to carry on the long tradition of pottery techniques, and the pottery has come to be widely known for its simple beauty and usability.
Craftsman Story
Craftsman Profile
Toshihiro Munakata & Toshinori Munakata / Munakatagama
Aizu Hongo Pottery has been made in Fukushima Prefecture for nine generations by a father and his son. The ancestors of Munakatagama were missionaries of Munakata Taisha Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture and established Munakata Shrine in Aizu. He began to make pottery while serving as a priest, and feeling that he had a talent for pottery, he resigned from the priesthood and began to devote himself to the pottery business. This was the beginning of the Munakatagama. The most distinctive feature of Munakatagama is its works with fuzzy colors created by using unique glazes. Both father and son have made inroads into Paris, New York, and other countries.
