Product History
When did these crafts start to craft?:200 years ago / 1800AD / Edo period in Japan
The history of glass making in Japan dates back to the Yayoi period. The technique introduced from the continent was used to make kagatama (glass beads) and tubular beads at that time, but the technique died out after the Middle Ages. It was not until the Edo period (1603-1867) that glassware reappeared in Japanese history.
Glassware was introduced to Nagasaki from Portugal, the Netherlands, and other countries, and was produced domestically under the name “biidoro. Since the technique resembled Chinese techniques rather than European origin, it is believed that the technique itself may have been introduced from China. The technique was eventually introduced to Osaka, Kyoto, and Edo.
According to records, glass was first made in Edo around 1711. It is written in an essay collection titled “Ureshiyu Shoran” that a craftsman named Gennojo blew glass. In addition, the geographical journal of Edo, “Takehoe Nenpyo” (1751-1764), also mentions that glass was made in the city.

Craftsman Profile
Iwasawa Glass
Founded in 1931, Iwasawa Glass is a valuable glass manufacturer that still makes glass by hand, even though its factory is located in Tokyo.
The company specializes in the “mold process,” in which molten glass is poured into molds and formed by pressing, spindles, and squeezing, and its main products are thick glass tableware.
There are only a few glass factories in Japan that are capable of this process.
Craftsman Passion
Passing on the Craftsmanship
Glass manufacturing is an industry in which production cannot be resumed once the fire stops and has no choice but to cease. In addition to being costly, kiln maintenance involves dangerous work, and there are many tasks where skill, intuition, and experience are important.
Because this is an industry that is difficult to maintain, we value each and every one of our craftsmen and focus on passing on their skills on a daily basis to deliver our products to our customers.
