This silver bangle was created with expert skill by craftsmen at a metalwork carving studio with a history of more than 200 years. Jardin means garden in French, and the design was inspired by the traditional Japanese garden style of karesansui, or dry landscape garden. Karesansui is a garden style that expresses magnificent natural scenery of mountains and seas by using stones, sand, plants, and trees without using any water. This bangle inherits its spirit. The craftsman's skill and originality resonate with the beauty of silver, creating a unique landscape. Its uniqueness and beauty make it a luxurious accessory for special occasions.

ARTISAN STORY

Chikueido has been engaged in metal crafts in Kyoto since the late Edo period (about 200 years ago), and now Yoshinaga Nakamura, the seventh generation, is carrying on the tradition. He produces a wide range of products, including tea ceremony utensils, Buddhist ritual utensils, and incense implements, using mainly gold, silver, copper, and other metal materials, as well as restoring and repairing them. We also produce a variety of metal crafts, including accessories for young people, using the metal crafting skills we have cultivated for over 200 years."

KAZARI KANAGU / JAPANESE DECORATIVE METAL FITTINGS

About 1,200 years ago / 800s / Heian Period (794–1185)

Decorative metal fittings reinforce and embellish the joints of architecture, furniture, portable shrines, Buddhist implements and boxes. They have accompanied temples and palaces since ancient times, later spreading to the tiny hinges, pulls and corner plates of warrior and merchant household objects.

In Japan, kazari-kanagu are a “supporting craft” that people may overlook. They appear on door corners, chest handles and temple pillars, protecting structures while quietly raising the dignity of an interior. Today the skills remain important in cultural-property restoration and are also adapted to furniture and jewelry.

Small fittings can be more difficult than large ones. Scrollwork or family crests may be engraved, repoussed, pierced and gilded on a plate only a few centimeters wide, yet the finished hinge or pull must still function precisely. Decoration and mechanical performance are inseparable.
