In the late 1950s, the second-generation head of Hishiya created "Yoroi-ori"—an original handwoven textile born from relentless experimentation and proprietary techniques.
With its soft plain-weave texture, disciplined pattern, and distinct three-dimensional grid, the fabric naturally evokes the presence of traditional Japanese samurai armor—giving rise to its name, Yoroi (armor) Ori (weaving).
The process begins in Kyoto, where master artisans of kirihaku (metal foil cutting) meticulously slit genuine leather into delicate ribbons just millimeters wide. In our Osaka atelier, skilled weavers then handweave each leather strand, one by one, with extraordinary precision.
A weaver produces merely a few tens of centimeters a day.
Through countless layers of time, technique, and artistry, the leather transforms into a material with the suppleness of fine cloth, yet an unmistakable, commanding presence. Among these, the series crafted with "Rimpa Silver Leather" features a subtle luster within the weave that accentuates light and shadow, bestowing an even greater depth to the armor-like pattern.
The vision to weave genuine leather.
Time-honored tradition paired with a spirit that defies convention.
This is Hishiya’s Yoroi-ori.

About 1,200 years ago / 800s / Heian Period (794–1185)
The history of zori is long and storied, dating back to the Heian period when they were already part of daily life as a common footwear. In those early times, they were simply woven from materials like straw, serving a purely practical purpose: protecting the feet and making walking easier.
It was during the Edo period that zori evolved into something more refined, incorporating exceptional comfort and fashion-forward designs. As a vibrant merchant culture bloomed—unmatched anywhere else in the world—and expressions like Kabuki and street fashion flourished, diverse trends in zori emerged.
Craftsmen began carefully selecting materials like bamboo sheath and fine silk, tailoring delicate hanao (straps), and reinforcing structural durability. Through these innovations, zori transcended their role as mere utilitarian tools, elevating into beautiful works of craft that embody the timeless Japanese aesthetic of iki (refined sophistication).
