SETTSU URUSHI
"We are not going to keep the traditions. We will do our best to update the traditions"
We often hear the term "preserving tradition," but I believe that tradition cannot be preserved by maintenance. I believe that it is necessary to renew it, to make it better and more functional than what our predecessors have created. I believe that the key to preserving tradition is to keep creating and destroying.
ARTISAN STORY
Settsu Urushi / Hiroki Settsu
He has been a lacquerware craftsman for about 30 years. He spent 10 years as an apprentice in Ishikawa Prefecture, where he studied lacquer and maki-e, and is now the third generation to take over the family business in his hometown of Akita Prefecture. He has created not only simple lacquerware, but also silver-embossed lacquerware in a style that matches modern daily life. We will continue to produce lacquerware that you have never seen before.
ACHIEVEMENTS
・Received Special Prize at Akita Prefecture Art Exhibition
・Received Governor's Prize at Kawatsure Lacquerware General Exhibition
・Received Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award at National Lacquer Ware Exhibition
KAWATSURA SHIKKI / KAWATSURA LACQUERWARE
About 800 years ago / 1200s / Kamakura Period (1185–1333)
Kawatsura lacquerware is traditionally traced to the Kamakura period, when retainers of the Onodera clan in Akita applied lacquer to military equipment. During the Edo period, production expanded into bowls, trays and tiered boxes, while merchants and craftsmen introduced materials and knowledge from Kyoto.
In Japan, Kawatsura is strongly associated with robust lacquerware made for daily use. Thick wooden bodies and durable coatings make bowls and trays practical household objects rather than purely decorative art.
A defining feature is the density of the production community. Wood preparation, foundation coating, finishing and decoration can all be completed within a very small geographic area. Craftspeople work close enough to coordinate constantly—essentially a centuries-old local supply chain operating within a few kilometers.
