Fuji is processed on cotton red fabric with pure gold and silver foil, and combined with silver lame fabric made of different materials. The fabric is then processed into glass by a special process. It can be used for daily use or as a decorative plate for good luck charm. Please enjoy the craftsmanship made with traditional techniques.

FUZURU KOGEI

"Sometimes it's important to put aside the opinions of others and stick to your own beliefs"

I thought that the craft and kimono industry would decline in the future and that I should start something new. So I began creating original works. At the time, people around me told that "You don't have to do that" and "Just do the work in front of you", but I trusted my instincts and started creating my works. As I did so, I received support from many people, recognition increased, and my main business also began to be appreciated. I realized the importance of keeping my faith.

ARTISAN STORY

Akihiro Uenaka / Fuzuru Kogei
A craftsman in Kyoto who has been engaged in Kyo-yuzen gold-printing for more than 30 years. He has been applying gold leaf to bags, plates, and various other items, hoping to pass this technique on to future generations in a different form.

KYO YUZEN / KYOTO SILK DYEING

About 340 years ago / 1680s / Edo Period (1603–1868)

Kyo Yuzen took a decisive form in Kyoto’s Genroku era, when designs by the celebrated fan painter Miyazaki Yuzensai were applied to kimono. Fine paste-resist lines allowed many colors to be painted next to one another like a picture, establishing hand-painted Yuzen. In the Meiji period, stencil-based Yuzen greatly expanded production.

In Japan, Kyo Yuzen represents formal celebratory kimono worn for coming-of-age ceremonies, weddings and other important occasions. Brilliant dyeing may be combined with gold and embroidery, while the same techniques now appear on bags, scarves and interiors.

A single kimono can pass through more than twenty stages—design, underdrawing, resist application, coloring, steaming, washing, gold decoration and more. Different specialists often handle each stage, making Kyo Yuzen less the product of one maker than a collaborative artwork created by Kyoto’s craft network.
