ARTISAN STORY

Mitsunori Onozawa / Kyohyogu Onozawa
He has been a craftsman in Kyoto, Japan since 1995, making shoji screens, hanging scrolls, and folding screens for use in tea rooms. He used to be a band member and spent his days playing music, but after visiting a relative's Hyogu shop, he became fascinated by the depth of the art of Hyogu and decided to become a craftsman. He focuses on the crafting of art panels, not only traditional ones, but also those that fit in with modern interiors, using his Hyogu techniques.

KYO HYOGU / KYOTO ART MOUNTING

About 1,200 years ago / 800s / Heian Period (794–1185)

Mounting techniques reached Japan with Buddhist paintings and sutras and were refined in Kyoto through temples, the court and tea culture. Hanging scrolls, folding screens and sliding panels are built from layers of washi, textile and paste, engineered to remain flat while responding to changes in humidity.

In Japan, scrolls and screens are not merely frames for art; they allow interiors to change with the seasons. Kyoto mounters play an intentionally supporting role—enhancing the painting or calligraphy, preserving it and repairing it when necessary rather than competing with it visually.

The most fascinating principle is that a good mounting is made with future restoration in mind. Wheat-starch paste and paper layers can later be separated and renewed. Avoiding permanent modern adhesives is precisely what allows centuries-old works to be repaired generation after generation.

These subtle differences are a natural characteristic of handcrafted works, making each piece truly unique.
