 Product History

When did these crafts start to craft?:160 years ago / 1868AD / Meiji period in Japan

In 1885, Enjiro Satoi, a cotton weaver, was shown towels made in Germany by a friend, an import merchant. At the time, imported towels were expensive and were only used by a limited number of upper class people as lapel wraps. Satoi focused on the pile structure of the towels, their high absorbency, and the speed with which they dried, and was convinced that they would surely be used in Japanese daily life as a substitute for hand towels. He decided to devote himself to the domestic production of towels, abandoned his family's cotton weaving business, and rented a house in Nakajo, Kitanakadori-mura, Sennan-gun (now Izumisano City), where he devoted himself to research. After much hard work, he succeeded in weaving towels by terry motion in 1887, the current weaving method. After that, Satoi exported the “Gozarashi Towel” to Shanghai and started factory production. He also encouraged his friends and acquaintances who were suffering from the recession of the time to take up towel weaving, thus creating the foundation of the Senshu towel production area. This is the origin of the domestic towel industry and the reason why Enjiro Satoi is honored as the founder of the Japanese towel industry.

Craftsman Profile

Nitta Towel Ltd.

Nitta Towel Ltd. was founded over 70 years ago and has been making Senshu towels ever since.
Senshu towels were the first towels made in Japan with a history of over 130 years.
Nitta Towel uses a unique manufacturing process to produce such Senshu towels that are eco-friendly and pleasant to the touch.

Craftsman Passion

"Natural Environmentally Friendly Towels"
In the general towel manufacturing process, glue and other materials are used. However, the glue must be washed off at the end of the process. These materials end up in the wastewater.
However, Nitta Towel are made without using glue, and the glue does not get mixed in wastewater. In addition, the process of glue adhesion and permeation is eliminated, which significantly reduces the use of electricity and heat energy, thus contributing to CO2 emissions reduction.

Nitta Towel's towels are more voluminous, softer to the touch, and more environmentally friendly than ordinary towels.
