Product History
When did these crafts start to craft?:500 years ago / 1500AD / Muromachi period in Japan
Wooden Drum is a wooden Buddhist altar utensil that is struck during chanting of sutras at funerals and memorial services.
It is characterized by its rounded bell-like shape, hollow inside, and carved with a fish scale pattern.
The history of Wooden Drum is very old and is said to have begun in the Muromachi period (1333-1573). One theory is that the original Japanese Wooden Drum was made of hardwood at Unko-ji Temple in Yamanashi Prefecture.
The inscription on this Wooden Drum was dated “Oei 4,” which suggests that Wooden Drums have been around since the Muromachi period (1333-1573).
Another origin of Wooden Drum is said to be the use of wooden musical instruments in Zen temples during the Muromachi period (1333-1573) to attract the masses.
