TENMA KIRIKO / TENMA CUT GLASS
About 180 years ago / 1840s / Late Edo–Meiji Period
Tenma Kiriko developed from the glassworking culture around Osaka’s Tenma district, where thick glass and deep grinding became distinctive. Modern Osaka also produced pharmaceutical and scientific glass, and those polishing skills fed into decorative sake cups and drinking glasses.
In Japan, Tenma Kiriko is known for a bold, practical Osaka character. Deep cuts are made into thick bases and walls so that, once liquid is poured, patterns reflect repeatedly across the bottom and can appear almost kaleidoscopic.
Where many cut-glass traditions focus on surface pattern, Tenma Kiriko deliberately designs internal reflection. A single cut can multiply through glass and liquid, making one motif appear several times. The vessel functions almost like a small optical device.
Individual Differences
As each piece is individually handcrafted, slight variations in color, pattern, shape, and texture may occur. These subtle differences are a natural characteristic of handcrafted works, making each piece truly unique. We hope you will enjoy these individual variations as part of the beauty and character of Japanese craftsmanship.
Production Time
If an item is not currently in stock, it may be made to order by the artisan. As each piece is carefully handcrafted, production may take several months depending on the item and the artisan's schedule. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
