STUDIO NAKAMURA
"0.05mm ultra-fine bristles, the crystallization of our original technology"
We are exploring how we can bring traditional technology to today's consumers. We select materials and manufacture all types of cosmetic brushes according to various beauty concerns and wishes, such as how it feels when applied to the skin, how easy it is to care for, and how it responds to sensitive skin. Because they are used every day, we carefully and wholeheartedly make each brush one by one, valuing "comfort" that resonates with the skin and the heart.

KUMANO FUDE / KUMANO BRUSHES
About 190 years ago / 1830s / Late Edo Period
Kumano’s brush industry began in the late Edo period when farmers from a town with little arable land traveled to the Kansai region for seasonal work and returned selling brushes and ink from Nara and other centers. Residents then learned brush making in places such as Arima and Nara, bringing the skills home and spreading production through the town from the 1830s.
In Japan, Kumano is known simply as “the town of brushes.” Its calligraphy brushes remain important, while painting and cosmetic brushes have become globally recognized. Even as everyday brush writing declined, techniques for preserving natural hair tips found new life in makeup and professional animation brushes.
The surprising fact is that Kumano was not especially rich in the animal hair or bamboo used to make brushes. It became a major production center through accumulated knowledge rather than local raw materials—a town built by people learning, returning and teaching one another.
Individual Differences
As each piece is individually handcrafted, slight variations in color, pattern, shape, and texture may occur. These subtle differences are a natural characteristic of handcrafted works, making each piece truly unique. We hope you will enjoy these individual variations as part of the beauty and character of Japanese craftsmanship.
Production Time
If an item is not currently in stock, it may be made to order by the artisan. As each piece is carefully handcrafted, production may take several months depending on the item and the artisan's schedule. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
