 Product History

When did these crafts start to craft?:400 years ago / 1600AD / Edo period in Japan

The first Kutani-ware kiln was established in the early Edo period (1600s), but was forced to close due to suspicion of smuggled goods. However, the pieces produced at that time regained popularity again with their gorgeous colors and distinctive designs. Kutani-ware made during this period is called "Ko-Kutani" and is still sold today at very high prices as vintage pieces. One hundred years later, the Kutani-ware market was once again booming, and various styles of Kutani-ware were created up to the present day.

Craftsman Story

Craftsman Profile: Katsuhiko Toide

Born and raised in Kanazawa—a historic city steeped in Japan’s rich traditional culture—Katsuhiko Toide finds profound joy and fulfillment in dedicating his life to the art of ceramics. Mastering both pottery (To-ki) and porcelain (Ji-ki), he coaxes out the distinct, innate character of each material to craft a diverse range of works, from functional everyday tableware to exquisite fine art pieces. While holding a deep reverence for time-honored traditions, he continuously strives to share his unique vision with the world, seeking a contemporary innovation that only his hands can bring to life.

Craftsman Passion

At the core of his craftsmanship lies a harmonious fusion of honoring heritage and embracing new artistic challenges. In recent years, Toide has focused his passion on his trademark technique, Yumen-Ginsai (Glaze-Surface Silver Painting), which intricately utilizes delicate silver leaf underneath the glaze. His artistic pursuit also extends to exploring the vibrant brilliance of Turkish blue glazes and the rich, deep textures of black clay (Kokudei). Rather than simply preserving the past, he aims to breathe his own modern sensibility into each piece—creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces that enrich daily life and remain cherished for generations.
