KAWACHI FUURIN
"Glass wind chimes makes the sound that heals the heart"
He believes that wind chimes can creat not only the beautiful sound, but also beautifying society as a whole by using discarded glass bottles and other materials.
ARTISAN STORY
Tsugihiro Kan / Kawachi Fuurin
He began making wind chimes in 2000 after learning how to make them from the daughter of a glass artisan. While he crafts the wind chimes, he always pay attention that people can feel more familiar with the beautiful sound that play with the wind. The materials are made by collecting empty bottles of cosmetics, whiskey, etc. from local residents and melting them down. The unevenness of the glass gives them different tones!

FURIN / JAPANESE WIND CHIME
About 1,200 years ago / 800s / Heian Period (794–1185)
The ancestor of the Japanese wind chime is linked to Chinese wind bells that reached Japan with Buddhist culture and became temple futaku hung from eaves. As glass became more widely available in the Edo period, smaller furin spread into townspeople’s homes and became associated with summer cooling.
In Japan, the sound of a wind chime is one of the strongest sensory symbols of summer. Hung by a window or under an eave, the paper strip catches moving air and makes the breeze audible. Wind-chime festivals and seasonal displays remain popular today.
The craft is really a form of psychological cooling: the sound does not reduce temperature, yet Japanese listeners strongly associate it with fresh air. Glass, iron and ceramic chimes all produce different tones, making sound quality itself a consumer choice for an everyday object.
Individual Differences
As each piece is individually handcrafted, slight variations in color, pattern, shape, and texture may occur. These subtle differences are a natural characteristic of handcrafted works, making each piece truly unique. We hope you will enjoy these individual variations as part of the beauty and character of Japanese craftsmanship.
Production Time
If an item is not currently in stock, it may be made to order by the artisan. As each piece is carefully handcrafted, production may take several months depending on the item and the artisan's schedule. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
