General Product Information
What is Mokume-gane?
Mokume-gane is a traditional Japanese metalworking technique that dates back to the Edo period. It was originally used to decorate sword fittings such as tsuba (handguards). The process begins by stacking several layers of different metals with varying properties to form a single, thick billet. These metal sheets are precisely cut to the same size, carefully stacked, and secured in a fixture. The stack is then heated until the layers fuse together. Once bonded, the metal is repeatedly hammered and stretched. During this process, the surface is carved and hammered again and again, gradually creating intricate woodgrain-like patterns. After countless hours of forging, a metal block originally around 2 centimeters thick is painstakingly thinned down to approximately 1 millimeter. The result is a stunning, decorative material that showcases the beauty of layered metals.
Kiseru pipes made using the traditional Japanese technique of Mokume-gane are very beautiful and are recommended not only for actual use but also for display.

Income for Craftsman: Craftsman get only less than 10% of selling price?
As written above, craftsman have not controlled last phase of sales channel that resulting in selling price is set by third-party without craftsman’s recognition. There are some cases that only less than 10% of selling price is given to craftsman. We promise with our customer / craftsman that we offer the fair trade with craftsmen in our contract!
