Product History
When did these crafts start to craft?:160 years ago / 1868AD / Meiji period in Japan
Kyoto cloisonné, a traditional Japanese enamelware craft, emerged in the late 19th century during the Meiji era (1868–1912). Influenced by Western art, artists like Namikawa Yasuyuki perfected the intricate technique of fusing colored enamel into metal. Kyoto's cloisonné artisans gained renown for their exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail, often depicting intricate designs inspired by nature, mythology, and traditional Japanese motifs. This art form reached its zenith in the early 20th century but declined with the advent of World War II. Today, Kyoto cloisonné is celebrated as a testament to Japanese artistic heritage, with contemporary artists continuing to honor its rich history.
Craftsman Story
Craftsman Profile
Hiromi Art
Since its establishment in Kyoto in 1970, Hiromi Art has been producing Kyoto cloisonne enamel ware for over 50 years.
Thery are particular about the beauty of color. Each color is carefully layered with the color of the glaze, and is the result of many years of accumulated techniques.
They believe that "old but new" is the traditional Japanese craft of today, and they are creating new cloisonne enamel ware every day, while keeping in mind the old traditions.
Craftsman Passion
"Commit to flood the streets of Kyoto with cloisonne once again."
Old cloisonne enamel ware is still used in temples. In the Edo period, cloisonne enamel was used for sliding door pulls, cigarette cases, and many other things.
Nowadays, cloisonne enamel is becoming less and less common, so we are working hard to make the streets of Kyoto full of cloisonne enamel again.
