ARTISAN STORY

Yoichi Negishi / Negishi Industry
Negishi Industry was founded in 1944 by a first-generation roofing craftsman who specialized in shrine and temple roofs. He established the company to produce horticultural metal goods using tinplate. In 1966, the second generation introduced the idea of applying techniques from Sendai to create copper, brass, and stainless steel watering cans, specifically designed for bonsai. He also proposed these to bonsai associations. Since then, Negishi Industry has specialized exclusively in the production of watering cans, dedicating itself to perfecting this craft.

About 150 years ago / 1870s / Meiji Period (1868–1912)

Japanese metal watering cans became increasingly specialized with modern horticulture and bonsai culture. Copper, brass or stainless steel sheets are formed into bodies with long spouts and finely perforated roses, designed to deliver water like gentle rainfall rather than a heavy stream.

For ordinary households a watering can may seem simple, but bonsai growers treat it as a precision tool. A long spout stabilizes pressure, while fine droplets protect moss and soil. High-quality handmade cans therefore remain valued by serious gardeners.

The tiny holes in the rose determine droplet size, spread and pressure. Their number, angle and diameter turn what looks like a simple container into something close to a fluid-control instrument. Copper versions add antibacterial properties and develop a distinctive patina through use.
