We mainly make Wooden Drum for temples, but we want more people to know and experience the beautiful sound created by cutting, shaving, and carving wood, and the traditional technique of making Wooden Drum that has been handed down in Japan since ancient times, in order to connect it to the future.

Fukada Wood Works
Fukada Wood Works is a woodworking company located in Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
Since its establishment of the first generation, the second and third generations have continued to make Wooden Drum.
They make Woodenen Drum for temples, homes, and musical instruments.
We mainly deal with mulberry wood and camphor wood, but we also deal with cork wood and zelkova wood.

MOKUGYO / JAPANESE WOODEN FISH

About 400 years ago / 1600s / Edo Period (1603–1868)

The mokugyo derives from fish-shaped wooden percussion instruments and sounding boards in Chinese Buddhism. The rounded hollow form used to keep rhythm during chanting became widespread in Japan during the Edo period. Craftsmen carve woods such as camphor, hollow the interior for resonance and decorate the surface with fish- or dragon-like motifs.

In Japan, the sound of a wooden fish immediately evokes temple chanting. It helps maintain steady rhythm and concentration during long recitations and remains in active use in many Buddhist traditions.

The fish motif has symbolic meaning: people once believed fish never closed their eyes, making them an image of constant wakefulness and diligent practice. Scales and paired dragon-fish forms can still be hidden in the carving of what at first looks like a simple round percussion instrument.
