We have been engaged in the greening materials business for more than 70 years since our predecessor, Yoji Fukami, started the production of hemp palm rope at his home around 1950.

SHURO HOKI / JAPANESE PALM BROOMS

About 300 years ago / 1700s / Edo Period (1603–1868)

Shuro brooms are made by bundling fibers from the bark of the windmill palm. They became common as tatami and wooden-floor homes spread in the Edo period, and palm-producing areas such as Wakayama preserved techniques for stripping, sorting and binding the fibers with wire.

In Japan, shuro brooms are being rediscovered because they are quiet, gentle on tatami and solid wood, and tend to gather fine dust without throwing it into the air. The fibers become softer through use, appealing to people interested in slower, careful household routines.

Palm fiber naturally contains a small amount of oil, and sweeping a wooden floor can gradually enhance its subtle sheen. The tool therefore cleans and lightly conditions the surface at the same time. It requires no electricity and almost no replaceable parts—a remarkably durable low-tech product.
