ARTISAN STORY

Konkan Studio
Established in the mid-18th century (Horeki era) in the historic Muromachi district of Kyoto, KONKAN SHOTEN has been a premier manufacturer and wholesaler of "Japanese gold brocade"—exquisite gold-brocaded silk textiles—for over 270 years.

Our heritage is built upon a vast collection of over 30,000 archival designs and an unwavering commitment to the finest "Shoken" (pure silk). While we continue to provide essential textiles for traditional Noh costumes and ceremonial robes, we also embrace modern innovation. Our work extends to artistic collaborations for films, TV commercials, and bespoke costume design, pushing the boundaries of traditional weaving.

Operating from an authentic Kyo-machiya (traditional townhouse), we harmonize ancestral craftsmanship with contemporary sensibilities. Through the elegant brilliance of every thread, KONKAN SHOTEN remains dedicated to weaving the timeless aesthetic of Japan into the fabric of the future.

KINRAN / JAPANESE GOLD BROCADE

About 1,200 years ago / 800s / Heian Period (794–1185)

Kinran is a luxurious brocade woven with gold thread or strips of gold-leaf paper. Influenced by imported Chinese textiles, it was used for temple decoration and high-status garments. In Kyoto, Nishijin weaving skills expanded the tradition into fabrics for Buddhist implements, Noh costumes, mounting and many other specialized uses.

In Japan, kinran is strongly associated with formal and celebratory settings. It appears on altar cloths, priestly robes, festival dolls and small accessories, where even a little gold gives tremendous visual presence. Contemporary designers also use it for wallets, bags and interiors.

The “gold thread” is often not round metal wire but a flat strip of paper covered with gold leaf, so it flashes differently as the viewing angle changes. Motifs such as dragons, phoenixes and scrolling plants also reveal centuries of exchange across Asia, weaving trade and religious imagery into the fabric itself.
