We started from a situation where we had no idea what we were doing when we sublimated the technology we were using for emblems and school emblems into jewelry. However, by not giving up, I was able to make them the main products of Hatakeyama Cloisonne Jewelry. I want to deliver works that I am proud of to consumers.

ARTISAN STORY

Hiroshi Hatakeyama / Hatakeyama Cloisonne Studio
A craftsman who produces Tokyo cloisonne enamel ware using traditional techniques passed down from generation to generation at Hatakeyama Cloisonne Studio, established in Tokyo in 1951. His specialty, pre-cut jewelry, is produced not only in Japan but also in other countries, and his technique is truly craftsmanship. The technique of placing glaze where there is no foundation and firing repeatedly is like a challenge to surface tension.

ACHIEVEMENTS

・Designated as a Tokyo Metropolitan Traditional Craftsman in 2005

TOKYO SHIPPO / TOKYO CLOISONNE

About 160 years ago / 1860s / Meiji Period (1868–1912)

Tokyo cloisonne grew from the rapid expansion of Japanese enameling in the late Edo and Meiji periods, supported by the capital’s metalworking and export markets. Vases, plates and ornaments for international exhibitions helped refine transparent and opaque enamels as well as wired and wire-free techniques.

In Japan, Tokyo enamel work overlaps not only with decorative art but with precision objects such as badges, medals and jewelry. Contemporary makers also use the process for small accessories and graphic fields of modern color.

Enamel is not simply paint applied to metal. Powdered glass is placed on the surface, melted at high temperature, cooled and then polished. Because color changes during firing, the artisan cannot see the exact final result until the piece leaves the kiln. Fire is an active part of the color design.

These subtle differences are a natural characteristic of handcrafted works, making each piece truly unique.
